Legal status in India

Plainly put: real-money online gaming is prohibited in India under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025. It bans offering online money games, advertising or promoting them and facilitating payments for them, with its Rules in force since 1 May 2026, and makes no exception for games of skill — so rummy played for cash is covered.

Older law still forms the background: the Public Gambling Act 1867 and individual state laws governed gaming for a long time, and courts treated rummy mainly as a game of skill.
